Epigenetic and Genetic Contributions to Adaptation in Chlamydomonas

2017

Epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation or histone modifications, can be transmitted between cellular or organismal generations. However, there are no experiments measuring their role in adaptation, so here we use experimental evolution to investigate how epigenetic variation can contribute to adaptation. We manipulated DNA methylation and histone acetylation in the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii both genetically and chemically to change the amount of epigenetic variation generated or transmitted in adapting populations in three different environments (salt stress, phosphate starvation, and high CO2) for two hundred asexual generations. We find that reducing the …

Aplasia of the lacrimal and major salivary glands (ALSG). First case report in spanish population and review of the literature

2018

Aplasia of the lacrimal and the major salivary glands (ALSG) is a rare disorder with scarce cases described in the recent literature. The pattern of genetic inheritance is autosomal dominant with variable expressivity. A 40 years male patient was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Service at the Hospital Universitario de A Coruna diagnosed with complete agenesis of all salivary glands. Our case it is the first of ALSG syndrome in the Spanish literature. Imaging tests are necessary to confirm the lack of formation of salivary glands and alteration of lacrimal system. A mutation of FGF10 has been proposed as the responsible of the syndrome. The management of the lacrimal alteration depend…

Clinical relevance of polymorphic markers of arterial thrombosis.

1997

Case-control and cross-sectional studies show that some common molecular variations (polymorphisms) of genes coding for proteins involved in atherosclerosis and thrombosis are often present in subjects who have experienced cerebrovascular or cardiovascular events. The clinical impact of the majority of polymorphic markers is disputed by prospective reports. In contrast, their pathophysiological implications and their role in monitoring parameters that are difficult to be checked by alternative means, are documented by the large majority of the reports. From the evidence available, there may be suggestion for further impact of polymorphic markers in vascular medicine. To substantiate this, n…

Histone-mediated transgenerational epigenetics

2019

Abstract Epigenetic mechanisms operate at the interface between the environment and genome, by converting the environmental stimuli to phenotypic responses through changes in the chromatin landscape, which ultimately affects gene expression in the absence of alterations in DNA sequence. In this scenario, transgenerational inheritance occurs when epigenetic variations induced by environmental stimuli are transmitted through the germ line to succeeding generations that had never experienced those stimuli. There is an ever-growing list of reports indicating that histones are fundamental players in these processes in a variety of organisms. In this chapter, we provide a perspective on histone-d…

How Can We Integrate Life Course Vaccination into the New WHO Definition of “Healthy Ageing”?

2019

The first global report on health and ageing published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015 introduced a new and innovative concept, namely, the idea that healthy ageing encompasses more than just the absence of disease. The report considered healthy ageing to be a more holistic process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age. There are two major components to this concept, namely, personal and environmental determinants of ageing. Personal determinants of ageing correspond to our intrinsic capacity, including our genetic inheritance, personal characteristics, health-related behaviours, and risk factors. Living our daily lives in g…
